On October 17 1945, the National Library opened (in
Sogong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul) and was renamed the National Library of
Korea with the enactment and promulgation of the Library Act in 1963.
In 1988, the main building was relocated to Banpo-dong, Seocho-gu,
Seoul as the national library.
In May 2009, the Digital Library was opened to provide services
that combine digital data and analog materials. It is an open space
which provides user-centered services for viewing, creating,
exchanging, resting and experiencing digital resources.
In the middle of the 1st Floor of the main building, there is a
spacious hall which functions as a reception space where book-related
events such as meetings with authors, seminars on book making and
small concerts are held. In this area, a little bit of noise is
acceptable. Currently, we are planning for remodeling to improve the
space

Before using the library, personal belongings must be kept in
lockers except for items that are allowed to bring such as laptops,
writing supplies etc. ※ Personal books cannot be carried
After storing your personal belongings in the lockers, you can
tag a library card on the gate sensor and enter.
After using the library, return the library card,
if it is for one-day use.
You can access the main building and the digital library of the
National Library of Korea with your library card. If you want to sign
up without authentication through I-PIN or a mobile phone, you are
asked to have your ID card with you and visit the library to get it
issued.
The library card is divided into three types :
one-day library card, regular library card and digital library card.
· One-day library card : this card is returned
after using it on the day of issue.
· Regular library card : This card is used
continuously within the expiration date (five years from the last use
date). If it is difficult to receive the card directly, an agent can
receive it by proxy at the library card issuing room by submitting a
power of attorney, applicant's ID and the agent's ID (or copy).
· Digital library card : this card is issued immediately
through mobile phones or online without visiting the library. Like a
regular library card, it can be used continuously within the
expiration date (five years from the last use date). You can use this
digital card to enter and exit the library, borrow and return books
within the library and also use the night library services.
※ The digital library card can be issued for users
who already have a one-day or regular library card.
※ In order to use printing and copying services,
multi-screening facilities, seminar rooms, studios and non-book
materials, you are asked to get a one-day or regular-use library card
in advance.
In case of issuing a new library card, you can obtain a library
card by registering in person or online. To get a library card in
person, stop by at the National Library of the Korea, or, if it is
difficult to visit, you can get the digital library card with our
official application.
If you visit in person, you can bring your ID
(resident registration card, passport etc.) and visit the library
card issuing room on the 1st floor of the main building. The library
card is issued after you are verified as a member of our official
website
After signing up as a member of the website, log
in on the mobile web/application and click "Digital Library Card" to
get it issued.
