본 논문은 처용무 반주음악으로 알려진 세종실록의 '봉황음'악보를 분석하여 재연하는데 그 목적이 있다. 세종실록 '봉황음' 악보에는 노래, 장고장단, 악기연주가 정간보(井間譜)로 기록되어 있고, 박자의 빠르기는 알 수 없다. 재연을 위해서는 무용반주음악에서 첫째, 가장 중요한 박자 빠르기를 연구해야하고 둘째, 음(黃)의 높이를 연구해야 한다. 그리고 악보중간에 "뵈"라는 문자의 음악적 해석이 필요하다. 따라서 다음과 같은 연구를 통해서 결과(재연)를 냈다. 첫째, 한 박의 빠르기는 춤의 동작, 노래(唱者)와 관악기(管樂器)연주자의 한 호흡을 고려하여 약 80bpm(80/1분) 내외로 결정하였다. 둘째, 음정의 높이는 황종(黃)의 음고를 C로 할 경우 노래는 가능하나 기악은 저음부분이 연주가 어려웠고, Eb로 할 경우 기악은 가능하나 노래는 너무 높아 일반사람의 목소리로는 어려웠다. 그러나 당시 황종(黃)의 음고가 C였고, 현재의 국악기가 변했으리라는 가정 하에 황종 음고를 노래하기 편한 C로 정했다. 셋째, 음과 음 사이에 있는 '뵈'는 여러 해석이 가능하나 그 부분부터 연주를 쉴 경우 다른 악기들의 연음이 자연스러웠다. 위와 같이 세종실록 봉황음의 음악적 연구결과 한 박의 빠르기는 80bpm(80/1분), 黃의 음고는 C, '뵈'는 쉼표로 해석하는 결론에 이르렀다. 이러한 결론에 따라 연주, 녹음하여 전통무용사학회가 고증한 처용무에 반주 음악으로 적용하였다.
This paper is executed for the purpose to play Bongwhangeom in 'Annals of King Sejong' which is known as accompaniment music to Cheoyong Dance. From the scores of Bongwhangeom in 'Annals of King Sejong', I could not identify the tempo because only lyrics, music tempo, and instruments were described using Jeongganbo. In order to re-play it as accompaniment music to dancing, I should detect the music tempo which is the most important, and then how to pitch the tune. And I also need to musically interpret the letter '뵈(Boe)' shown in the middle of the score. Accordingly, Ire-played through the studies as follows; Firstly, the speed of one tempo was decided to be about 80bpm in consideration of dancing actions, singing, and breathing of wind instrument players. Secondly, I found that provided that Whangjong(黃鐘) is tuned as C, singing was possible while instruments were difficult to play in bass parts. On the other hand, normal people were not able to sing if tuned as Eb. As Whangjong(黃鐘) was C on those days, and under the assumption that present instruments have evolved, I decided it tuned as C for easier singing. Thirdly, '뵈(Boe)' which is shown between the notes, can be interpreted in various ways. I found it natural when the instrument stops and other instruments are handed over to play. I finally concluded after the musical study of Bongwhangeom in 'Annuls of King Sejong', the tempo is 80bpm, tune is C, and '뵈(Boe)' is to stop. I played and recorded by this conclusion and used it as accompaniment music to Cheoyong Dance which was historically investigated by Traditional Dancing Historical Society.
